Guru James Hogue began his martial arts training in 1975 at the
age of 5 years old. He began studying a system call Tjimande in
Uniontown, PA. Guru Jim, as his students call him, studied this
art until he was 9 years old. Guru Jim and his family moved to
Cleveland, Ohio so his parents could find work. Guru Jim met so
many different martial art students and teachers. Guru Jim found
that Silat and Kuntao was very much alive in Cleveland, Ohio.
Guru Jim studied Kun Lun Pi Kuntao (Chinese-Indonesian
system), Poekoelan Tjiminde (Wetzel System), Huc Chun
Kuntao (Reeders System), Chuan Chi Tzuan Kung Fu
(Filipino-Chinese Kung Fu), Pangasinan Kali (Filipino Martial
Arts), and many other martial arts.
At the age of 18 years old, Guru Jim began working in the field of security. Guru
Jim worked in retail stores, and bar rooms. At 19 years old Guru Jim started
working for the Mc Crory Stores Corp as an Undercover Retail Detective. Guru
Jim went from having one store under his protection then was given four stores
to work. Guru Jim achieved his State Certification of 120 hours of Private
Security training. At 21 years old, Guru Jim began to work for one of his good
friend's dad on his Fugitive Task Force (Bounty Hunters), but was still working
in contract security. By 23 years old, Guru Jim was getting his own security
accounts in the Cleveland area with his Private Police Commission. Guru Jim
was hired as the Head of Security at Belinda's Night Club. A real dive where
fights were common in this place. Drug dealing and usage was everywhere, and
over looked. The owner was even shot in his own night club. Guru Jim hired his
own students to be the security. The female customers in the night club would
stay by the doors in case a fight broke out, and their dates would go to the
bartender to get the drinks. In six months after the Pukulan Goon Squad took
the security over using sound police and security tactics, and Silat for defense.
People started bringing their parents, and grandparents for a night of fun.
Belinda's was known as the night club for fun, and not for fighting. You mess up
in Belinda’s you got thrown out, or arrested. Guru Jim worked as a Corrections
Officer for the City of Cleveland where he used his art to control unruly inmates.
Guru Jim went and graduated the Police Academy as one of the top in his class.
